Use of a Biocompatible Fiducial Marker in Evaluating the Accuracy of CT Image Registration

چکیده
Rationale and Objectives. Accurate registration of Computed Tomography images to the patient is crucial for computer-assisted surgery. Markers used in Roentgen Stereogrammetric Analysis can be located in a CT scan using a novel approach, and can also be located physically. RSA data act as ”ground truth” for the 3D marker locations. Methods. Two foam-bone phantoms were marked. The markers were scanned 7 times with RSA, 3 times with axial CT, and contacted 4 times with a coordinate measuring arm. Root-mean-square errors were derived for the registrations. Results. CT and RSA data register to 0.15 mm RMS error. CT and arm data register to 0.25 mm. The markers are biocompatible, and the coordinate measuring arm is usable in an operating room. Conclusions. Typical in vitro registration errors are about 2 mm. We have developed a marker that provides superior registration, and a procedure that can be used for in vivo studies.

Intensity-Based 2D-3D Spine Image Registration Incorporating One Fiducial Marker
In this paper, we propose a hybrid similarity measure for 2D-3D image registration that is a weighted combination of an intensitybased image similarity measure and a point-based measure incorporating a single fiducial marker. We evaluate its accuracy and robustness using gold-standard clinical spine image data. The use of one fiducial marker substantially improves registration accuracy and robu...
متن کاملAccuracy Validation in Image - Guided Orthopaedic Surgery
Validating the accuracy of image-guided surgical systems is a challenging and important problem which has received little attention in the literature. Potential sources of inaccuracy include: CT imaging noise, model generation errors, errors introduced by fixturing, intra-operative data noise, registration errors, and inaccuracies in surgical tools and actions. In this paper, we discuss our exp...
متن کاملCt Registration: Experimental Determination of Suited Fiducial Marker Material and Registration Errors
BACKGROUND CT imaging is commonly used by physicians to monitor the development of pathological conditions, e.g. brain tumours. Accurate monitoring of a unique point in the brain over consecutive CT scans in between which a patient’s head may have moved requires determination of the relative position and orientation of the skull coordinate system with respect to the imager coordinate system, kn...
متن کاملMultiresolution-based registration of a volume to a set of its projections
We have developed an algorithm for the rigid-body registration of a 3D CT to a set of C-arm images by matching them to computed cone-beam projections of the CT (DRRs). We precomputed rescaled versions (pyramid) of the CT volume and of the C-arm images. We perform the registration of the CT to the C-arm images starting from their coarsest resolution until we reach some finer resolution that offe...
متن کاملIn Vivo Evaluation and In Vitro Accuracy Measurements for an Ultrasound-CT Registration Algorithm
An algorithm for the registration of bones in three-dimensional CTand ultrasounddatasets, based on surface-volume-matching, is tested in vitro with respect to its accuracy. A pointregistration based on fiducial markers is used as a reference for the measurements. The comparison of ultrasoundund point-registration shows maximal deviations of up to 1.7 mm for one vertebra. The mean deviation is n...
